The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area Engine Shop 216 flywheel cover

I'm a beginner at this engine stuff haha and I'm trying to free my 216 engine. I'm trying to remove the flywheel cover and can't seem to get it off. I've got the two screws off and it hangs down, however it doesn't seem to want to come off. Am I missing a step? Thanks!

If it is like the little sheet metal cover on my '53, I think it has 4 screws that hold it. Check at the corners where it is still attached, may be screws hidden in the grease.

Clean up the cross member under the transmission. You will see 2 holes that you can put a screwdriver through and loosen the 2 screws that clamp the cover to the transmission. Don't take them all the way out. The cover is slotted and will slip free. When you put it back, slide it under the screw heads and it will fit right back.

I know I had a heck of a time find one of those covers for my truck.... I guess either they work loose and fall off or people replace the clutch and don't bother putting them back on.

So I went back under and found one screw that come out only until it hits the support beam of the frame. I can't find any other screws. I have a 1942 if that helps.

Figure 116 on this page shows the locations of the 1942 flywheel cover screws whilst talking about the clutch. Like most manual pictures, it is a view of the component that makes everything look very simple.

Like Steve_H & Whitelightning recommended, clean the area the best you can & also wear some safety glasses if you're working supine (I was doing the same thing you are four weeks ago).

Go ahead and spray/squirt some penetrant (Blaster/Kroil/Liquid Wrench) in the cylinders through the sparkplug holes if you haven't already.

Remember, there are two pieces. One mounted to forward face of bell housing (flat) and one mounted to bottom face (bowl).

You don't happen to have a photo I could reference? I thought the flywheel cover was one piece?

Here's my problem. Those screws don't line up with the holes in the cross member and the flywheel cover isn't slotted. It seems the only way I can take the cover off is by removing the screws completely.

I used a wrench to remove the cover cap "screws" you can't get to at the cross member.
