I have been getting little burps out the tail pipe going down hill coasting.....some loud backfires. I figure the Rodchester B needed the little mixture screw turned out for a richer mixture.....no deal no matter how much it moved out same old story....BUT.....I decided to turn it in and now the burps have gone away. I was told that I needed more of a rich mixture instead I leaned it out and so far no burps or backfires.......WHY?

Unburnt fuel in the exhaust system?

O2 getting into the exhaust system?
I had the problem when "backing off" on the accelerator (". . . burps out the tail pipe going down hill coasting.....some loud backfires . . ."). It was corrected after lowering the float level in the carburetor and changing the exhaust gasket.
I do not know which solved the problem.
