Hello, I am done with the cab corner and the whole cab and bed. I grind the heck out off it. It looks pretty good. I am not going to paint it right now. The question is what type of primer can I use to protected best till I get around to do so... A sealer... thanks in advance

Dog,
If the project is just going to sit for a while before it gets a full bath of epoxy primer I would suggest any decent rust protecting paint. I prefer Zero Rust but Rustoleum would also work to protect it from rusting again. I would scuff it up really well before going over it with epoxy primer when you are ready to cover all the pieces.

The cost of the epoxy primer is too much to use it a little at a time and once opened it does have a definitive shelf life. Get all the pieces ready and then shot them at the same time.

Good luck.

Do you know what paint line you are going to be shooting your truck with? I would recoomend using PPG DPLF series epoxy primer. Its an excellent corrosion resistant primer/sealer. It is non sandable, just a sealer. Then spray it with PPG K-36 primer. You can shoot just about any PPG topcoat over the K-36. The DPLF primer must be coated with something within a week of application for it to work properly.

Other paint lines may offer the exact same performance as what I've mentioned, I'm just familiar with PPG.

if it were me i would get cheap car paint off ebay and paint it then resand before the final paint if not be ready to sand the rust off primer will let it rust the best thing is keep it inside and covered if you use rustolium it has fish oil so be ready to fight fish eye in your final paint

I have been in this business for 30 years. I was a factory representative for Sherwin Williams auto finishes. There is nothing but NOTHING that will increase the odds of a nice finished product that sticking with one SYSTEM and following the tech sheets.

Pick a system, any system, PPG,DuPont, S-W, Sikkens, ANYTHING is better than mixing products.

Martin Sr,
What primer would you recomend to use when the project is not going to be painted for a while? Maybe up to a year or so.

Use epoxy primer. Later it can be scuffed and you can do you body work over it, sanding primer over it and if you have some left you can use it thinned down as a final sealer before your finish coat. The stuff is magic.

I read the original question to be what does he use on the areas he has worked as he finishes them to keep them from rusting while he works in other areas. My suggestion to use ZR or some other coating other than Epoxy primer is based on the thought that he has some sort of original coating in place and that it would be too expensive to mix up a batch of epoxy for one or two pieces or areas. Once you open the catylst it has a very short shelf life so it would be a waste of $$.

I agree that Epoxy primer is the way to go when all is ready for the final bath prior to sandable primer/paint, but if the ZR is fully cured and then scuffed prior to the application of the DP primer there should be no problems from what I understand.

To me this meant he was done sanding/grinding the "whole cab and bed"? In that case he might as well shoot the whole thing with epoxy?
