Hi,

Has anyone used this floor mounted starter switch? I am swapping a V8 into my 56 and want to keep the floor starter. To me, it looks like the switch looks like it is intended to be mounted to a horizontal surface, not the angled firewall as in the original stomp starter.

it won't matter what orientation it's mounted, pressing it makes contact, I'd think the "stripe" across the body of the switch is the mounting 'plane' .... best bet is ask them how it mounts, maybe on the starter itself in place of the solenoid

That is the switch that mounts to the starter. You won't be able to use it with a starter that uses electric solenoid.

Oh, I just realized this is the factory replacement switch for the 6 cylinder starter. I want an electric starter switch that will mount on the floorboard in the old stomp starter location and provide current to the new starter on my V8. Maybe a starter switch from an older tractor? My ford 9N had a foot pedal starter if I recall correctly.

Grandpa,

That is the replacement starter switch for the 6-cylinder motors, it mounts on top of the starter motor...don't think it will work on the V8's.

What you need is a swtich that will power the solinoid on the V8 starter. See it the switch on this page will work p/n 7-1005 about 3/4 down the page under Starter Switches. http://www.texasindustrialelectric.com/switches.asp This switch would stick up above the floor mat like a dimmer switch and you would run the soloniod wiring through it as if it were the key switch.

Hi all,

The Cole Hersey switch Mike mentioned will fit nicely on the firewall. What current rating would I need for a SBC starter? The other Cole Hersey switch listed on the same website has 100 amp rating but the P/N 7-1005 switch doesn't list current capacity. Same size terminals though so they should have the same rating.

I would like to fasten the head from the old stomp starter on the new switch. Any thoughts how to do it? Looks like the head on the new switch is riveted to the plunger.

Small Block Chevy Starter motors have a solinoid to handle the high amps, your new switch will be pilot duty only and will be fused at 15 anps or less.

Just a thought on how to put you pedal on the new switch...could you weld a bushing to the back of the pedal that fits around the new switch cap and then just epoxy it on??? All of your pressure will be trying to push it on, not pull it off...

Hi again,

I bought the Cole Hersee 9060 foot starter switch. The flange is a bit too small to screw directly to the firewall so I bought a couple of large washers that I drilled to attach it to the firewall. Looks good and will give me the a bit of the old with my new V8!

I also want to do what you are talking about. The switch you referenced will mount on top of a early v8 starter. Newer starter have the linkage the pushes the bendix inside the casting of the starter head. The solenoid bolts to the starter head. Older starters the bendix lever sticks out and the solenoid bolts to the starter motor case.

My plan was to use old type start mount the switch your talking about on that starter in place of the solenoid and make linkage to connect the stompper to the external bendix lever which will push the switch and run the starter after the bendix is engaged.

Not really around to implementing yet but thinking that the cross shaft from the stopper will bolt to the bell housing bolts.

Goal is to work like the six cylinder did with a v8.
