For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 116 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 116 | I need to change all the fluids on a 69 C60 and wondered what lub should be used in the gearbox. It has a 2 sp rear axle also that I want to make sure and get the correct oil. The diff is a little noisy in low range, I wonder if 85-140w might quiet it down.
Also, I've only used this truck around the farm and have been thinking of getting it out on the road. What is a comfortable top speed for the 366 5sp C60? If I can run 60mph I'll be happy. I need to move it 25 miles down the road and I can only haul 10K on my trailer. Title says this thing is 11.9Klbs.
Anyone have a set of decent side mirrors for sale that would fit? My mounts have rusted. Thanks, Dan | | | | | Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 4,962 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 4,962 | We used to run 90W straight mineral oil in transmissions and 180 W in the summer and 90 W GL 5 in winter the rears. I now run 50W synthetic in all my transmissions and 80W140 synthetic in the rears year round. If it has an electric 2 speed, pull the cover on the shifter and make sure there is no water in it. Originally the books called for 10W non detergent for the shifters, but there is nothing in there that 10w30 will hurt.
60 MPH should be no problem. By 1969 the speed limit was 75 on some interstate highways. Federal law dropped it to 55 in the mid 70's to save gas. | | | | | Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 116 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 116 | It does have an electric 2 speed axle. I didn't know the shifter used a different oil. Assumed it shared the diff oil.
Based on my shift pattern, "R" to the left and up, I belive this has a Spicer transmission. Any idea how much oil I need to purchase? Would 5 gallons be enough for the trans and diff? | | | | | Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 4,962 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 4,962 | It probably is a Spicer if it has R to the left and up. 5 gallons should do it. If you take the cover off of the shifter, you will see that it has an Ajax screw with a block and very small ball bearings. There is a rubber boot between it and the rear end. The shifter needs thin oil to operate. 3 in 1 machine oil would be good too. | | | | | Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 116 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 116 | I was up at the farm today and had a look underneath. It is a Spicer 3152.
Looking at the axle shifter I see it stamped "Used SAE 10" on the cover. The small filler plug is very near the bottom so it must not hold very much oil.
Also, looking at the differential I couldn't find a drain plug. I see the fill but wonder how I drain it. Would removing one or two of the lower front bolts allow it to drain? | | | | | Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 4,962 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 4,962 | There may be a plug at the bottom that a 1/2" square drive ratchet will fit in. The hole for the ratchet is usually plugged with dirt. If not, thee is nothing wrong with removing lower bolts. I would let it drain for a day or so. The stuff is probably pretty stiff and will smell like a skunk. | | | | | Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 116 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 116 | I'll look again for the drain. I plan on hitting the entire truck with a pressure washer this weekend. Maybe I'll uncover it. Thanks for all your help crenwelge! And, watch out for all them hippies escaping from the Kerville folk fest down the road from you.

No drain but it drained well when I removed the two lower bolts. Nasty black stuff but still flowed. It took right at 5 gallons to do the transmission and diff.
Local parts store didn't have the engine oil (Wix 51129) filter in stock. I also discovered the air compressor filter missing. I pulled the housing to clean it and it was empty. Assuming a foam filter will suffice.
Thanks again! This forum keeps these old trucks going.
