Now that life has slowed up a little, its time to renew that craving to take something apart...spruce it up...and put it back together. Lawn mowers and other small projects have filled the void for long enough. I lucked into a 53 GMC that was poorly restored and only half finished. The guy didn't realise the truck had 20,000 original miles on it and was going to toss the original wood decking for the box. I finished restoring a 76 Camaro and now the 53 is getting attention. Hope to call on some of you for advice .

The truck had a fair amount of interior paint intact. It was a copper / or dirty gold that I couldn't seem to match. I didn't want to get paint mixed so I used champaign mist . Its a little too gold but once \I get more interior in it and it gets a little dirty it will be ok. I just refaced the gauges and saw the first set of gears on the odometer were like new so I'm pretty sure it only has 20,000 miles. I would like to keep it as original as possible but am worried about the split rims. Any one have ideas.

Yes. If there's one thing you should change for driveability, it's the tires. Tubeless radials are best, and 235/80R16's are the best of those (common, and they closely match the original profile), which you should run on whichever drop-centre rims please you most.

That is prety much a concensus on this board. As a long-time trucker - who has been both ways - I believe it all the way.

Hey Hotshoe

Where does a guy get 16" rims that will have hub cap springs/clips. I have a brochure that has 15" 8 lug rims to make the truck appear as a 1/2 ton..... but no 16" 8 lugs that resemble originals.

you won't find rims newer than 60 that have the hubcap clips, but you can get the clips from most of the vendors and install them on suitable rims
