51 3100 with a 59 235.I got an oil filter out of a 53 chevy school bus. Not sure what size 6 cyl.It has a mounting plate welded to one side with four holes. It was bolted to the side cover on the bus motor with the cover mounting bolts. My 235 has no mounting holes anywhere on the manifolds and the side cover bolts don't line up with the holes in the bracket besides being on the wrong side of the motor.I'm looking for ideas on how to mount this thing. ---Jack

Jack,

There were a variety of GM and non-GM oil filter assemblies and different mounting set-ups. If you can post a link to a photo of the filter mounting bracket the advice you receive will be more helpful to you.

The oil filter canister on Chevrolet 6-cylinders were usually mounted on the manifold side of the block, with the mounting bracket attached to the intake manifold with u-bolts.

A variety of mounting instructions are shown in this Tech Tip for AC/GM oil filters.

Jack,

I'd bet that is not a standard-cab truck engine filter.

It looks like it mounts on a flat surface, like the firewall.

My 54/55 GMC COE's by-pass filter canister has a flat mounting surface - for mounting on the firewall.

Maybe someone will recognize your filter. Nice photos.

Did the school bus have a side cover that also covered the spark plugs? If so, it was probably a low-pressure 235, and the side cover bolt spacing will be different than your late model 235. I have several of the intake-mounted filters on hand if you're interested in a swap. PM me.

Thanks Jerry, but my manifold doesn't have any place to attach a filter. The one I have is a perfectly good unit,I just need to figure out where/how to mount it. Maybe the firewall is the answer.---Jack

The Fram and AC accessory filters attach with two U-bolts on any 216/235/261 intake manifold. I'll see if I can post a picture of one on one of my stockpiled engines in a few minutes.

At the link in my first post, near the bottom of the Tech Tip is an installation sheet for an AC/GM filter for 40/49-52 non-COE truck.

This question made think of,
On the 1954 Chevrolet 1/2 ton truck with a hydramatic transmission.
How does the oil filter hose that is nearest to the firewall connects to the engine block.
I know it connects differently with the manual transmission.
It would be helpful if anyone has pictures of the difference.
I do not have a filter on my 1954 Chevrolet 1/2 ton with a hydramatic and would like to see how it was done in the factory.
I believe the connection is different because of the hydramatic linkage that is going to the carburetor.

Thanks,

jorb,

I'll let you know when I put my engine back together. It has the 2-qt filter and I think it was located forward of the carburetor, but I do not recall how/where the hoses were routed.
