in the block on the chevy 235 1949 i have
there is a washer inside which i noticed when i pulled the distributor and it nearly fell down into block.
I dont see one on the 1959 engine I have.
did they eliminate that on that year ??
also i think the 49 has a later distributor as someone
had already changed it to 12V flywheel /starter.
how can i confirm it is a later distributor ??

One issue at a time,
Washer between the distributor and block? Big flat washer looking thing? I am not sure what you have.
Cast drive gear on a forged cam will wear fast. Forged gear with a cast cam will rear the cam also fast. Match the drive gear to the cam.
Which distributor you have can be determined by the number on the label on the side of the dizzy. There is a Good post on the dizzy part numbers on here some where. I just can't remember where.

i should have said top of oil pump??
there is a recessed washer on the 49
is the 59 the same ?? when i pulled the distributor
on the 49 the washer almost fell to the side.

There should not be a washer on top of the oil pump. I have seen some pumps that look like they have a washer built into the top of the pump. Maybe you have one of these and the washer has come loose.
Chevrolet sold as a replacement, for the earlier steel cam distributors, the distributor designed for cast came. I have not seen any abnormal wear by using this combo. I do not recommend going the other way around.
