The Stovebolt Site Forums The Parking Lot Big Bolts Muffler Question?

I will soon be ready to put some exhaust on the 57 GMC 370 LCF with a 270 6 cyl. engine. I have 2 questions.
It still has the original muffler hanger. Looks like a big "J" -- and would accommodate about a 6 inch diameter round muffler, maybe larger.
1st. Any suggestions as to what kind and where to get the muffler?
2nd. What diameter should the exhaust pipe be that connects to the manifold? (I plan on getting a shop to make one)

Note: Presently it just has an exhaust pipe and no muffler. Also the pipe was on it when I got it. It is not correct and seems too small, because it just wobbles around where it is bolted to the manifold.
The manifold is the 3 bolt flange.

I have a 2 1/4" on my 46 2 ton from the manifold. It is stainless mandrel bent tubing that I ordered to make an exhaust for one of my Porsche's but felt like the truck needed it sooner! I think it's a little overkill for the original non pressure 235, but I had it in the shop and was a project I could complete without waiting on any parts.

The muffler is a Dynopack or something like that. I wanted to all be stainless so I didn't have to remake it. All the parts were purchased off of eBay from a seller called performance curve I think.

You probably won't find a shop to make a stainless mandrel bent exhaust for your truck. I would suggest going with a minimum of 1 3/4", but a 2" would be nice.

I called IMCO International Muffler Company and they looked up this heavy duty muffler to fit my 270's exhaust pipe. It is a well-made heavy-duty truck muffler.
