For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Apr 2012 Posts: 26 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Apr 2012 Posts: 26 | So the other day my '42 panel had a mishap. A friend opened the locking door with the key (both original) and the key cylinder fell out with the key. Seems as though the key cylinder slides into/attaches at the rear to the shaft that goes through the handle. It sheared off. I can't find supplier for the shaft replacement. Worst case scenario I replace the whole locking handle but can't come up with that source either. Any sources out there?

Call Jim Carter, he has a cache of used parts and might be able to help you out. | | | | | Joined: Jun 2009 Posts: 1,596 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jun 2009 Posts: 1,596 | On your 42 is the cylinder in the handle or in the door? | | | | | Joined: Apr 2012 Posts: 26 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Apr 2012 Posts: 26 | The cylinder is in the handle of the Passenger side door.

Still taking all other suggestions

Maybe you'll have more luck looking for 41 parts. Is the part you need shown in this photo? | | | | | Joined: Apr 2012 Posts: 26 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Apr 2012 Posts: 26 | HI Shop Shark and all..
Hrm... Well my guess is one of two things, and I'm a novice to this. One: They only made civilian vehicles for 2-3 months in '42 and this is one. Jan 2st may not have seen the 100% conversion of every vehicle to the new door handle. I don't know the truck building assembly line either, but guess it could it be one that was started in late December and then tagged 1942 or they were using up the last of the handles. As there are only a couple months for evidence I suspect that "rule" has got to have a little play in it built in.
Two: Perhaps the door was at some point ruined and a more rare 1941 door was installed after the accident. The truck is titled and tagged with GMC ID but does have a Chevy grill and hood... so it could have easily gotten parts from a 41 Chevy donor.
And Yes !! The part I need is the long shiny shaft towards the middle of the photo that extends through the handle and is secured to the handle itself with the pin.

Interestingly enough though my internal sleeve is slightly different. In the image there is a two part sleeve that surrounds the last 1/3 of the cylinder shaft and in the photo it each half lies flat. Mine is a one piece aluminum sleeved. Nonetheless it is the same handle ad lock. | | | | | Joined: Jun 2009 Posts: 1,596 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jun 2009 Posts: 1,596 | HI Shop Shark and all..

Shop shark is just a meaningless title, FYI. The actual username is the line above that in Blue. I would bet on the door being changed. Either way, looking for 42 stuff won't help you as most of it will be the other style. I hope you can find the parts you need! | | | | | Joined: Jun 2009 Posts: 1,596 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jun 2009 Posts: 1,596 | On closer inspection using your photo (as I hadn't compared it to the actual parts that broke) it is the rear end of the cylinder itself that has sheared off.

Having discovered how many changes GM made between Chev's/GMC's, and Canadian/American trucks in those days, I'm not surprised your parts are different. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2000 Posts: 2,074 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jan 2000 Posts: 2,074 | Jeremy, Give this company a call, they have lots of quality repops. While I don't see a handle for 42, they show one very similar. Best of luck Jim http://www.iandireproduction.com/index.html | | |
