I've got my 270 at the machine shop to determine what caused the failure after rebuild and what it will take to fix it. While it's there I'm considering replacing the stock cam.

Can I improve performance and mpg at the same time?

Is it worth it?

RV cam or other?

This is my D.D. so I want to be able to pull a trailer if I have to but still get decent gass mileage.

Which ever way you go, having the bottom two bolts on the cam gear cover retapped so they install from the exterior/front instead of inside the oil pan. Makes changing a cam a piece of cake...

I did that the first time I rebuilt the engine. It's one of those 'common sense' things.

You can get a grind that will increase performance a little. To really improve performance you need to go lightweight pistons, higher compression, better ignition and it all depends on how much money you want to fork out. I doubt that it will help fuel mileage.

Increases in performance or fuel mileage are possible, but the two are usually impossible to achieve at the same time. Short duration high lift cams are known as "torquers" and they produce gains in low-end torque that would be useful for trailer towing and general-purpose load hauling. Long duration cams with lots of overlap (intake valve opening while the exhaust is still closing) produce a rough idle and poor low end torque, but they increase horsepower at high RPM. Most hotrod cams are the long duration type, with a somewhat higher lift and a faster rate of lift. Bad news for trailer towing or load pulling unless you keep the engine wound up in the lower gears a lot.

OK, sounds like my best bet is to stick with the original cam. I don't think I'll be unhappy with the 270, but if I feel I need it I can look into hei, better carburation, and dual exhaust. After reading stories of failed cams and expensive rebuilds I feel a lot more comfortable with the original cam.
