I have a 283 and an sm420 in my 59 Apache. I scored a floor starter from another 59 truck over the weekend. Is there a bell housing that will mate a 283 and an sm420 and still allow the floor starter assembly to mount to it?
The truck I got it from had a 235 and a 3 on the tree. Will that bell housing for on my application? I have heard that the bell housing for the 6s and 8s are interchangeable but have never tried it myself.
Any info is appreciated, Thank you

The 216/235/261 6 cylinder bellhousing is totally different from the V8. The 2nd-generation sixes, 194/230/250/292 and the 151 4-cylinder have the same bellhousing bolt pattern as the V8's, but by the mid-1960's they had stopped using the stomp starter on anything. Jerry

They were found on Willys military vehicles, some Studebakers, and others. Run a wire from the ignition switch through the floor starter switch as you would any starter button. They look like a dimmer switch however, not as cool as the factory GM stomp starter. Or you could just make a dummy one growing out of the floor using the stomp starter parts. Fred

Pretty slick I thought. | | | | | Joined: Oct 2013 Posts: 219 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Oct 2013 Posts: 219 | Thanks gents,
I have what remains of the 6cyl start on my truck (push button moved to dash and on/off key). I would prefer the floor start but I may leave well enough alone just for now. If I can find a secondary bell housing I may try my hand at modding it to accept the floor start. If that ever happens (and if it is a success) I will make an update to the thread. Thanks again for the info and ideas. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2011 Posts: 1,362 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Feb 2011 Posts: 1,362 | If you want floor start, you simply need a nice inline 6, 235 or 261. All V8's were electrically actuated only. Not saying that with a bunch of fab work that it will not be possible though. What you could do, is fab a bracket that mounts to the existing bellhouse to engine bolt locations use washers to space it and longer bolts etc., it would allow to use or mimic the 6 cylinder bracket. And do what cletis said. No need to mod or ruin the good factory truck bellhousing.
Kicking self for selling off my Taskforce trucks. Still looking for an LCF or conventional big bolt in decent shape.
As of 10-26-2022, A 55.2 Taskforce long bed now the work begins
