It looks like I can remove it without affecting the preload, would this be correct? also what brand rear would this be....all answers greatly appreciated...Thanks | | | | | Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,844 Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) | | Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,844 | A loose yoke usually indicates there's bearing wear behind it. Unless the nut has come loose, there's no reason for the yoke to suddenly develop any looseness because it's tightened to hundreds of ft/lbs of torque, and usually cotter-pinned into place. If the yoke is wobbling, the preload is completely gone. so it's wise to do a complete teardown and inspection.
If the center section of the axle can be unbolted at the front, you've most likely got a HO72 axle. If there's a one-piece housing with only a rear cover plate, it's probably a Dana type 70. (Mostly used in GMC's) Jerry

Yes the pumpkin comes out from the front,The tag on the door jamb identified the rear axle as (GE6 or G86) no spin. The yoke is so sloppy it appears that the splines on the yoke are jumping the splines on the pinion starting from a stop with a load but not always, just sometimes. And again, it appears that there's a seperate nut for the preload... Thanks for repling... | | | | | Joined: May 2005 Posts: 8,878 . | | . Then having been through the whole thing if it turns out that the yoke was the only trouble you will have peace of mind knowing the rest really is OK.

There is no separate preload adjusting nut. The pinion nut also provides the preload for the two tapered roller bearings that position the pinion in the carrier assembly. Jerry
