I asked this once before but maybe there is more info/talent here now!

I was planning an S-10 frame swap with a '97 vortec 350. I have the complete S-10 and the complete '97 Suburban as donors.

As I think about this conversion it seems that maybe using the Suburban frame might be a better option. Shortening the frame doesn't bother me. From what I can determine the burb is only 4" wider than the AD.

Any comments are welcome. Has ANYONE had any experience with this type of conversion? If so please contact me. thanks ralph [email protected]

4" wider is a lot.Wouldn't that cause clearance problem with tires hitting the fenders? On the front for sure.

Would be 2" per side. I was thinking of offset wheels? I have never done anything like this before. I am a fairly good welder/fabricator and a fair junk yard mechanic. I have fooled with old CJ's for a few yrs but new to this kind of stuff.

I was thinking of doing the same with a Tahoe. You might be able to do a moderate body lift to clear the fenders.

I worked on one - Suburban frame/engine etc with a '50ish panel wagon body. It was a hoot to drive. It wasn't a lowrider, I put a small antenna on the roof peak just above the windshield and it got bent on the door header pulling it out of the shop - easy 10' high. It wasn't a tall antenna at all.
But, it is a neat truck and drives great.

That can open up a whole different can of worms. Not only will changing the offset of the wheels cause alignment issues, but pulling them in to narrow the track width will also lead to potential tire/wheel rubbing on the frame or suspension components. It can also lead to bearing issues if the offset is changed too far.

Alignment issues? Please explain? If you're changing the body you need yo realign anyways.

I'm talking about alignment issues that could arise from using different offset wheels, which will alter the scrub radius. Depending on how far of an offset change is being done, it will also affect the camber/caster/SAI/IA readings. Granted, most of that can be compensated for to some degree by a competent alignment man, but some thought does need to be put into what components are used for the final product.
