Do you have to drill into the block for all of these short pump installations? | | | | | Joined: Jan 2001 Posts: 5,337 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jan 2001 Posts: 5,337 | There is always some confusion when you say short shaft pump. It is true the pumps used up to 1954 on pass, and 55 first on trucks, have a short shaft, but are more commonly called a high mount pump. 1955-62 pumps came with a very long shaft. These pumps can have the hub pressed on the shaft farther and the shaft cut off. These are what most people call short shaft pumps. The 1955-62 short shaft pump does not require any drilling for installing.

It has been that way for about 15 years and my biggest concern is changing fan belts. The pump I have has an external impeller which goes into a hole in the block. My concern about changing to the other style pump with the internal impeller is whether or not the fan belt will line up. I looked at a pump with the long shaft and considered pressing on the hub farther and cutting the shaft as you suggest. However if I recall the longer shaft pump also has more of the pump body casting surrounding the shaft. | | | | | Joined: Jul 2012 Posts: 4 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Jul 2012 Posts: 4 | ? i am in the process of doing a 216 to 235 replacement is going with the adapter plate the best solution or is going with the short shaft pump the best way. my engine rebuilder said i could have over heating going with the adapter plate. also can i use the 216 manafold .my exhaust manafold were it ties to the pipe has a slite angle i was told it may be a 235 manafold ? the manafold has mumbers on it G M 38s5627 can i get a set of step down manafold rings for the 235 i am a newby Herb from maine | | | | | Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 2,393 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 2,393 | The relocation plate centers the water pump more accurately to the radiator. You should not have any overheating problems with the relocation plate. I did not and I bet others here never had a problem either. This is assuming your radiator is in good working condition.I think the mainifold number would be 3835627, not 38s. My parts book only goes to 1951, so I don't have that number.

Heed what DrewP posted.
Ask your engine builder if he/she ever had an over-heating problem using an adapter plate with an older style water pump (on a block that had been carefully cleaned out). I bet the builder never used one and is stating hearsay or is just stating an opinion.
The exhaust manifold used on all 216s and on earlier 235s had a straight-down outlet (later 235s and all 261s outlet angled towards the rear). There were also differences in exhaust/intake port diameters.

There are step down rings available.Try Jim Carter truck parts. I bought mine a couple of years ago.

If so it would be a 1950-62, those years are for the exhaust manifold only, intakes changed some through the years.
