As the title states, what sort of stand can I buy or make that will support a 235 and allow access to the bellhousing? I need to swap the 235 BH to the 216.

I make a cradle out of 2X4's that supports the oil pan rails, and do plenty of cross bracing so it doesn't collapse sideways. You can make it tall enough to sit on the floor, but a shorter one that allows you to put the engine on a workbench makes more sense.

Just be sure you have a very sturdy workbench!

JRDamien,
There was post a while ago from Raleight58 Engine Cradle and there were several examples. There is also a very useful tech tips.

Here is one that I had made a few years ago.

I made one very much like Breads but put casters on the bottom so I could push it around the garage.

I just uploaded two engine stands to the bolt bucket. So the first two should be it. Edit: Seems to be the first pic and the very last one. The second one was made out of a 1950 pickup frame. It doesn't show it here, but there is a radiator mount and radiator and exhaust system even. I use it in conjunction with my start kart to test engines. The other one is a simple 1x1 square tubing cart that rolls around. I made 6 of them because that's how many engines I have. I need the ability to roll them around the shop. They have bell housings and even transmissions on some of them. The key is the exactly 9.5 inch spread between the rails so it sits very nicely on the oil pan ledge. Hope this helps!

The engine cart how-to is there.

Nice. Is something this low going to make it nearly impossible to get the bell housing (and the parts that must come off before the bell housing) off?

Deve,
So I went to your " more bolt pix "
On page 4, last pic, I see your engine stand. Is that the actual front end of a truck for your stand?
Holy crap is that sweet! I hate you...(kidding)
I'm going out side to set my garage on fire. Phil...

I worked in a single car unheated garage for years, so I am very pleased to have a better place now. Yes, its the front end of a burned out truck that was too fried to trust the steel, so I made an engine stand out of the front, a pickup bed trailer out of the back. Now and then you get information on parts that you don't really need, but... this was one of those.
