I've found plenty of post covering putting a spin on adapter on a six but not a V8. I bought a '62 Biscayne with no oil filter at all so this isn't converting from a canister to a spin on. This is putting a spin on adapter where there's been no filter before. What's the process for putting a spin on adapter on a filterless 283?

I know J.C. Whitney use to sell spin on adapters for replacing cartridge filters on Chevy V-8s...... They always showed 2 different ones.

My problem is that I don't see an obvious place where the adapter would mount. I can get the adapters about everywhere but that does me no good if I don't know where it goes. If it currently had a canister filter I'd know where but it doesn't have any filter at all.

Tiny, the only Chevy V8 made without a filter mount was the 1955 model 265. (It used the same canister filter the stovebolt 6 engine had). The oil pressure line to the filter was attached ahead of the intake manifold at the front center of the block, just above the timing cover. The return line went to a fitting in the oil pan, I believe. All the others had a filter mount cast into the block at the driver's side of the bellhousing area. Either a can-type canister filter or a spin-on was used from 1956-up, depending on the year of the engine. I wonder if somebody has swapped a 55 engine into the car sometime in the past? Check the stamped engine ID number on the machined pad ahead of the passenger's side cylinder head. If it is a 55-year 265, it's a scarce engine, worth something to somebody who's doing a period-correct restoration on a 55 car or truck.

I think I found it Jerry. I found a huge honking thing hanging down toward the aft driver's side of the block. Looks like it'll hold two or three quarts of oil. It's half again or double the size of the canister I put on my '38. If that's indeed the filter I will be putting on a spin on adapter for sure. Thanks my man.

Yep, you found it- - - -about 4" in diameter and nearly a foot long! The O ring gasket above the canister has a nasty habit of sticking in the groove, so if you decide to use the original filter element, take an ice pick and pry the old gasket out. I've found two, and sometimes 3 canister gaskets stacked on top of each other on some oil changes back in the dark ages!

I like the looks of the old canister filters, but then again, I like most anything "old". You can still buy the filter that goes inside the canister, they're about 10 bucks. I have a '56 265 that has the spin on adapter, and I also have a '58 235 truck motor with no oil filtration at all. the canister oil filters are worth something to someone doing a resto. How much is the question.

I have an adapter on order. I'll keep the canister. It'll be easy to return it to original if I ever decide to do that.
