Has anyone moved their battery to the frame ? I was looking at freeing up some space under the hood on my '63 and thought about putting the battery on the outside of the passenger side frame rail , near the front of the box (fleetside). There appears to be room for this , and I can use the original battery mount and hold down from the underhood location .
Any comments ?

I,ve been thinking about doing this for a while. It would work great. I,m thinking more of the weight transfer. I,m going to use a box with a fold down side.

I had considered weight transfer as an added bonus to my situation .
I have yet to think of any shortcomings for this project .
Where would you find a fold down type box ?

I relocated mine to the inside right frame rail just behind the cab, but I will be using a stepside bed. This will clean up the underhood area, also considering the heater and AC unit's for under the dash to clean it up more.

There won,t be any electrical isues. Use a good heavy cable going to the starter & 8-10 gauge wire going to a term. block. Run a cable to the frame for ground & run a ground cable from the frame to the engine. Make shure the pos. cable is retained & doesn,t rub anything. Bat boxes are available at the street rod suppliers like Yogi,s or Speedway, but I think I will have one made up. A friend of mine does welding & fab. & needs the money.

Wrenchbender has it right, and I fabbed my own box and also used a side terminal battery. This made a tidy installation and should be easy to service, just under the truck.

I made up a new battery tray this evening out of angle . I had a friend weld it up and it is now painted and drying in the garage . I will see how it goes tomorrow .
I found the existing tray to be unusable for this as it has one side that extends deeper than the other thereby preventing me from mounting it flush to the frame . It is also longer on that same side than the other - making it extend down past the bottom of the frame . Add to that , it has the tab for attatching the hold down rod preventing me from being able to lift and install the battery once the tray would be mounted to the frame .

I put the new tray in Friday . I also made up a shield to protect the battery from any junk that may fly up from the tire . It all looks good and there are no issues so far .
I have added a second horn to the location where the battery used to reside , and I moved the windshield water/coolant overflow bottle to the same location . Now I do not have coolant hovering over my voltage regulator and horn relay .It looks pretty good . If anyone is looking for a relatively easy mod , this is one to consider .
