Regarding the grinding starter - a new set of 'pads' on the starter engage fork solved the problem, with some help from the correct contact switch. It engages, then spins fast, and starts easy!
Now I can hear the throw-out bearing growling ... will it ever end?

I bought the truck without a working battery, and bought an 8 volt on the advice of my FLAPs man. Or to put it in other words, I had no particular starting problems that led my to choose an 8 volt battery. Although the starter could use renovating, I expect the starting system is in good enough shape to work fine on 6 volts, that is why I would return to 6 volts.
My dad and I are working over a 1941 Chev sedan (in the Alt gallery!), which still has its 6 volt battery. That car turns over just fine, better than my truck. Of course, it has some compression problems...
After a few years of learning experience, I agree with the many voices on these pages that an 8 volt battery treats the symptoms of a sick changing or starting system, not the causes of those problems.

Did you bring your bolt over from the states or find it there?
Mine starts just fine, that hasn’t been a problem. I would just feel a little more secure when my wife starts driving it if it would kick over a little faster.

I bought both vehicles in the states, I just returned this week from 5 weeks in Minnesota, where the 41 Chev still waits. Here in Sweden, the truck is still a rarity, and interest in pre-50's vehicles is still lukewarm. The 50's muscle-cars sell like hotcakes.
I think my truck could use a rebuilt starter, that will be a winter job. If the motor doesn't catch after 5 seconds I'm in trouble. Usually it is only a problem when the engine is warm. The float level could probably be set a little lower for the modern gas.
