That return line routing was a common re-routing that was only needed/used if the internal oil-feed was providing inadequate lubrication to the rocker arm assembly. After-market oil-flow diversion kits (I think non-GM - 6 Cylinder Rocker Arm Lubricating Kit) were sold for this purpose. Usually people/mechanics just bought an adapter/Tee, an oil line/tube, and necessary fittings. Some people think that this is a "cob-job", but it seems to work OK, at least for a while.
2. Unless you engine has be converted for using a full-flow oil filter, a by-pass filter is required (if you want a filter). If your oil-inlet line to the filter is a small diameter (maybe 1/8" inner diameter) it will work as a by-pass filter (about 10% of the oil flow goes through the filter - the rest of the oil flow is directed to oil journals in the block. This by-pass filtration works fine.

If a spin-on filter is substituted for that type it also needs a restrictor in the system or the engine bearings will be starved for oil from the volume going through the filter and back into the oil pan. I use a Holly carburetor jet with a 1/16" hole in it as a restrictor if someone insists on a spin-on filter installation. Jerry

If I never lose oil pressure will my bearings be starved for oil ???? If 10 percent goes through filter then after 10 times of oil displacement would 100 percent be filtered ????

The mathematical calculation for achieving 100% of the oil being filtered is not that simple; however, approximately 100% of the oil gets filtered in a reasonably short period of time.
If you never lose oil pressure and oil is flowing into all appropriate places in the engine, your bearings will not be starved.
The oil that drips out of the rocker arm assembly returns to the pan via the push-rod holes in the upper part of the cylinder head, and down through the holes in the block near/between the lifters.

I've looked at 3 oil filters (off of AD Trucks ) all the lines are 1/8 ID and none of them had restrictors (they could have been removed ). Jerry I've looked in every book I've got and can't find Either 1/8" or 1/16" ....I'm going with this set-up unless I can find or be shown where 1/16" is right and 1/8" not ....also I can't find any jobber selling restrictors for oil filters ....

But Jerry is right, if you are using an aftermarket filter set up you'll want either a restricted filter, or the 1/16" restrictor in the line.
The Wix oil filter with the restrictor in it is 51050. Napa number is 1050. You FLAPS should be able to exchange these numbers if they don't handle Wix or Napa filters.
After reading your post again, it sounds like the filter is plumbed into to the pressure side on both the drivers side of the engine and the passenger side. Coming off the oil pressure fitting, to the filter, then to the passenger side port on the head means both lines are tied into a pressure port. So not sure how much filtering will happen.

Because of this capacity, it is not designed to filter smaller particles. If you have a PH-8A hanging on your firewall, it is just a worthless piece of junk that you should get rid of. Whoever installed it probably knew about as much about engine lubrication as you do. Baldwin filter is B50. Also has the restrictor built in. Getting well-meaning advice rejected out of hand does not particularly put me in a mood to share any more facts and figures. It's very simple to thread the inside of one of the fittings used to plumb a spin-on oil filter for a 1/8" Allen-screw pipe plug with a 1/16" hole drilled in it. Then it won't matter what type or part number spin-on filter is used. Jerry

Does anyone know the size of the orifice? There is a WIX 24755 base for that filter. It has 1/8 NPT hose/line ports; however, the size of the flow control orifice in the filter is what matters. The PH 8 has a very open-weave filter element so enough oil can flow through it to supply the volume an engine needs to lubricate everything without excessive pressure loss. That means you'll get the same extremely inefficient filtering as every other engine with a full flow filter gets, as opposed to the close-mesh element the GM engineers specified with their canister filter. There are spin-on filters that we used for various types of hydraulic units in an industrial environment that would provide much better filtering while still offering the convenience of a disposable filter can. Research Baldwin or WIX for a filter that fits your spin-on base and provides as small a micron size as possible. All the PH 8 will do is look like a filter when compared to an original-equipment canister filter. Jerry

Now I'm in mind set to mount the original canister filter on the firewall ....and use the close-mesh element G.M. engineers for the canister filter ....( I've got 3 of them , I located the hole in pipe that's in the canister , [hard to see its so small]

A WIX 51515 (PH8A crossed) is a 21 Micron filter.
Used in CJ2s Wix: 51006 32 micron Wix: 51080 21 microns Wix: 51010 32 micron
The standard C4 filter used by Chevvy in 50's trucks is not that great. Again, FRAM doesn't post specs but using a WIX 51006 is ONLY 32 micron!!!!!
You'd be better off with a PH8A and the PROPER installation than the original C4 or the modern WIX equivalent.
Modern specialty filters (AMSOIL etc) and even 50's toilet paper filters (frantz, etc) can get into the sub 5 micron range but with SIGNIFICANTLY DENSER media.
Any filter is better than no filter, though. Run whatever you can or change oil frequently.

For example, the Ford L134 motor used in the GPW had a .064in orifice as shown IN THIS PHOTO to regulate oil flow. Putting the restriction AFTER the filter evens out the flow through the filter.. it more or less sees the same flow through the filters life. Putting the restriction BEFORE it means that the flow through the filter is variable. For screw on tpe filters this may not hold true.. but for cartridge elements is does. | | |
