Can anyone tell me if GMC used the nomenclature of 1500 series on any models around 50-53 I have a mate here in Australia swears he has a GMC with 1500 series on the side of the bonnet ?

Your truck likely was assembled in Canada, which used different numbers than the US built trucks. It sure doesn't sound like a GMC number though.

Hy Chrislon, in Canada in those years GMC series numbers would start with a 9, for example 9500. Chevrolet series numbers would start with a 1 for example 1500, the way I understand the situation a lot of the trucks bound for Australia were assembled in Canada, and have serial numbers similar to Canadian trucks, hope that helps.

Thank you Guys you've pretty well confirmed what I thought and most of the books I've got only list GMC's as 9 series and Chevs 1 series both in America and Canada Cheers for now from Aus

Not sure if this will help much, but when getting ready to re-do the GM Restoration Tech Tip, I noticed this link to Canadian trucks. If there isn't something specific on that page, it may still lead you to more info, directly from GM.

BTW, hope to get that updated this week. Have a contact at GM for details.
