Hopefully this is the right forum. What color is factory for the side mount spare tire carrier painted for a 59 step side? Same as the bed? Black?

as an optional add-on the brackets would have to be black, haven't seen any that weren't

Wasn't the side mount a rpo? If so, wouldn't it be painted body color then? I have a 53 with the optional side mount and it was a RPO, I'll have to check but I thought I saw some copper tone paint on mine from the original paint but not positive. Now this is going to bother me, I got to head out to the garage this morning and check.

yes, the side spare was RPO 341 in the TF years, 2 variations for 4 models, that could have been added to a pickup of any possible color at the factory [or at a dealer] .... were the brackets added to the bedside before it was painted? or were the brackets painted along with the welled fenders? or did they have a stock of brackets pre-painted all possible colors? or did they paint brackets to match what was needed at the moment? or was the bracket on your 53 painted some other time in the last 60 years? were the rear fenders in 53 always 'body color'?

Headed out to the garage to take a look see. I'm in the process of disassembling the bed and running boards for repair/paint and replacing the wood. My truck has the RPO side spare tire and I removed it from the bed and disassembled it and put it in the glass bead cabinet. So the repaint color was yellow, under that was a gray primer under the gray primer was a heavy coat or multiple coats of the factory original coopertone color under that was a thin black primer. Rear fenders are factory coppertone too. So at least on the 53 with RPO side spare it seems it was painted with the box as a unit. BTW yesterday I glass beaded the splash aprons and they were the same.
Now one could venture a guess that dealer installed side mounted spare tires could be different especially long boxes the don't need a rear fender change. I'd venture a guess that they might be found semi black in color, just a guess. Dealer installed short boxes would need the rear fender too so the dealer would probably repaint to body color.

Also to add, there was only the factory primer on the bed sides under the brackets (no color coat) of the spare tire framework. So the bed and spare tire assembly were primered separately then assembled then shot the final color coat as a unit, at least on my Oakland built 53 1/2 ton.
