I was wondering if I could paint the dash and other interior metal with aerosol paint. My 48 is going to be British Racing Green on the outside and I wanted to do the interior metal in a silver or champagne color. I do not have any experience with using a paint gun. I thought that aerosol would be ok for the interior due to the interior not being exposed to elements. Wondering if I am correct.

Many of us here have used Rust Oleum 7272830 Dark Bronze for our interiors. It's almost a perfect match for the original "champagne" color. It will take almost a dozen cans to do the complete interior. You can order it by the case at your local hardware store or online. A case contains 6 cans. One of the things I like about it, is you can touch up an area without it showing and not have to completely repaint an entire panel. Here's my GMC done in it. 52 GMC dash

Huck, first I'd like to say how much I admire your restorations and appreciate your photography (I'll bet a lot of us do). I'm very impressed that a rattle can will produce such a professional finish. Now for my own selfish question, how close are the details of your interiors to that of my 47' 3600. Thanks.

Thanks Marko for the compliment. I also have a 50 Chevy 1/2 ton so I am familiar with it and can compare it to the GMC interior. The main difference between my 52 GMC and my 50 Chevy (and I assume your 47 Chevy would apply as well) is in the area of the dash trim and stitching on the upholstery.
My 52 being a Korean War era truck does not have the stainless steel trim or side window moldings but rather plain steel all painted the same color as the interior. The raised horizontal ribs on the dash are not painted the contrasting silver as they are on the Chevy. On the the earlier and I assume the later GMC dashes the raised ribs were painted a beige color instead of the silver on the Chevy.
GMC used the French seam stitching while Chevy used a beaded stitch.
In terms of a color match, I found the 7272 RustOleum to be a very good match compared to an original paint 49 GMC seen here and also very good match against the remaining original paint for my Chevy. The RustOleum sample is on the right side of the sample. interior color samples vs original paint Both the original paint and the samples are metallics and as such the color is very dependent in the angle of the light source but overall against the original GMC paint the 7272 was the closest match.

From your photos it looks as if the entire interior steel was painted in that color, floors, firewall, kickpanels, doors, cab roof and back, door jambs and under the seat frame. It also appears that the steering wheel and column (even into the engine compartment were this shade as well. Thanks so much for the detailed photos, this is the route I will go unless you know of another resource. Mark

Oh, almost forgot.....I don't see any primer under my original finish. Whats up with that? Is it just thin?

Probably the best rattle can finish I have ever seen. It looks professional. Very nice work. Enjoyed your picture album.

I didn't see any primer under my interior finish either. On the restoration; however, the entire truck was sandblasted and then epoxy primed. Steering column and wheel on my truck were finished using Jim Carter's steering column acrylic enamel paint - not RustOleum - with a clear coat of urethane over the wheel. I think it is an excellent match of the original with a hint of purple. Engine compartment is body color. Firewall has painted flat black fiberglass insulating pad. Cab roof has original waffle type insulation glued to it with the standard brown fiber/card board headliner.

Thanks Steve but the RustOleum 7272830 is almost foolproof with its low gloss finish. You can blend in a touch up respray and it is virtually undetectable which is great for the inevitable scratches during reassenbly.

Huck, what primer did you use under the rustoleum?

The entire truck was primed over the sandblasted surfaces with PPG DLP90 followed by Southern Polyurethanes Turbo 2K High Build Primer.

Is that RustOleum 7272 available in quart cans, or is that why you buy it in rattle cans (aside from the ease of touchup)?

Huck, I saw this post and wanted to confirm something. I have a '48 3100. Looking to repaint the interior and the Rustoleum 7272 looks to be a good match. Can you confirm what interior parts would be all painted this color. I'm particularly interested to know if the steering column/column shift and/or wheel would also we this color. Thanks, Charlie

I used Jim Carter's steering wheel and column paint on my steering column, column shift lever, and steering wheel with a clear coat of PPG DCU2012 Urethane on top of the wheel for durability. Everything else was painted with the RustOleum 7272830. GMC interior The raised bars of the dash in '48 on your truck would have been painted silver with the recessed areas interior body color.

Would the steering column bracket be painted the same color as the dash or column?

Same color as the interior, not the mast jacket/steering wheel.
