59 GMC fuel gauge. I am about to pull the gauge cluster out again. I remember that to test my gauge with ignition on, sending unit un-hooked, it should go to FULL.
Now, can I put a dead ground to the sending unit post and it should go to EMPTY, if its working correctly?
I am planning on testing it on the workbench. Thanks.

If you think you have an issue with your wiring between the guage and sending unit, ground the post at the guage with a jumper wire.

No, I have ruled out the wiring from sending unit to gauge. I have it pinned down to the gauge itself. Plan on going into it looking for an open in the coils or hopefully, bad connection to the post, such as rust.
Actually I will be having jumper wires, gauge and a new sending unit all laying on the workbench.
Just wanted to make sure a dead ground was the way to test it.
