| | | | Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 841 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 841 | i am having trouble chasing down the problem in my brake lights on my 63 c10. i am no electrical wiz. i have juice at the fuse box, at the switch under the pedal and it works, juice from the white wire going to the steering colmn harness. that's it where does it go from there? i don't have any at the plug going out the firewall to wires going to rear. i an also a little sketchy on how they work in general. i always thought the brakes were the brown wire along with the tail lights, the green was one turn, yellow was another. how is the brake brighter and how does this really work. i have several other electrical questions but will stick to one for now. thanks, hr | | | | | Joined: Jul 2004 Posts: 5,708 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jul 2004 Posts: 5,708 | hoggyrubber, First I must say that I love that name...it brings a smile to my face every time I see it. Instead of confusing you with half baked ideas, I have pasted a link to a good site with wiring diagrams for your '63. You can look at the cab wiring and trace where the wire actually goes. There is a diagram for the wires back to the frame too. Scratch around on the site and you might answer some of your questions. This means that there are no dedicated brake light wires going to the rear, only two wires from the turnsignal switch. There should be two wires going from front to back for the brake/turn lights, one for the taillights which divides at the back and one wire for the backup lights, if so equiped, whick also divedes at the rear. The bulbs have a high intensity filament and a low intensity filament, with the low being the taillight filament. | | | | | Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 843 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 843 | Do the turn signals work at the rear?I agree with Baldy,it's the signal switch | | | | | Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 841 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 841 | thanks, i picked that name because a older man i bought some used tires off of said that. they were real wide tires for my c20 that had very thick tread. he said "that's some real hoggy rubber" funny phrases like that stick in my head. anyway, yes the turn signals work they don't blink yet because i don't have the front sig lights in yet. i have changed this wiring harness out this is one from a 64. it was a gommed up mess when i got it. i also changed the steering wheel and turn signal harness from the 64 as well. i got juice goin into the harness (signal) but none comin out. i will see which wires the turn sigs are using and try to trace it down, i need to pull the wheel off again sometime. just thought of somthin while i'm typin this i don't have the turn sig thing that plugs into the fuse box, i need to check into that too. thanks, i have the manuals for all these trucks and the wiring diagrams included they help me some but it doesn't show me all i want to know, or i can't understand all i want to. thanks to you all i will check out the link. hr | | | | | Joined: Jul 2004 Posts: 5,708 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jul 2004 Posts: 5,708 | hoggyrubber,
Baldy speaks the truth..and your sleuthing isn't half bad either. The wire going from the brake switch to the turn signal switch is shown as a 20 gauge white, just like you said. The schematic shows a pair of 18 gauge coming out of the turn signal switch going to a firewall connector..they are pink for left stop/turn and violet for right stop/turn. Stuck in with those should be a 18 gauge black which is taillights.
You must have some type of voltage tester to know the white wire going up the column has power. If neither PINK or VIOLET has power at the firewall when your helper hits the brakes, the chances are that the white wire has broken further up than you can see, or its contact in the mechanism is broken or has fuzz or a candy wrapper on it preventing it from making contact with the other two switch points.
It might be time to think about pulling the steering wheel to get a first hand look. Does the turn signal lever feel mushy or funny when you signal a left or right turn. Have you tried sticking a new turn signal flasher in!

So if your signal light comes on when you have no flasher,that may be where your problem is.I'm not sure where it might be,but there are very few wires involved | | |
