on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Jul 2013 Posts: 26 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Jul 2013 Posts: 26 | I am restoring a 54 chevy 3100 with the 235 engine. It has a 12v generator designed for a 55-62 6-cyl chevy. It is a 30 amp. I am ready to order a new wiring harness from JimCarters and now don't know what to order. Can anyone help? | | | | | Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 Cruising in the Passing Lane | | Cruising in the Passing Lane Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 | best bet Gary, is to get a harness for your year, the 6V harness will do fine on 12V [heavier wires than necessary, so adds a "safety factor"], and will suit your gauges and all the electrical configuration regardless of the particular gen/reg

Like dealing with Jim Carter as we've bought just about everything else from them and they've been very helpful. I'll call JC tech department to see how user friendly their kit is, but has anyone here actually used it?
I think we're looking for a kit without much cutting and splicing, measuring/fabricating and such. Anyone know of a tech article that outlines or details installation?
Know anyone who has purchased it??

I knew somethings would probably be different as they don't list a harness for my application. The main differences are; most of the '48 fuses are omitted (no more head light fuses) The fuel sending unit wire is too short. No courtesy light wire, or steering column horn wire Other then that it looks and works great for me. It is $500 as opposed to $750 & $950 I was quoted from some of the popular "wire harness" vendors here. _________________________ | | | | | Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,270 Bubba - Curmudgeon | | Bubba - Curmudgeon Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,270 | Gary U,
As you most likely know, the original 1954 wiring harness has plastic-coated wires, and black tape or black woven "sheathing".
Jim Carter and Classic parts sell original-style 54 harnesses at good prices and quality (with correct color-coded wiring).
Do you have any old wiring in place in the truck? If you do, just remove and replace, one harness/segment at a time. If you do not have any wiring in place, maybe someone else will post helpful advice.
You will most likely also want to buy rubber grommet(grommets ?) for where the harness comes through the firewall.

If yours is like mine, a 52 1/2 ton then you will need to get that grommet around the temp sensor, the oil pressure line and the wire harness before you put it into the firewall. The choke and throttle cables are cake compared to the others.
