In pursuing leads to the mystery of my curved steering column connector, I discovered some threads in the archives of this page which answered all of my questions but one --how do you wire a three-prong flasher?? I have a flasher socket with black, red, and yellow wires. Because it was fused, I know the black wire goes to a constant hot feed, but what about the red and yellow ?

Update. The color of the wires isn't important, it's the flasher terminal label. Through several hours of computer searching, I know the power feed is the X terminal. The other two are P and L. Several sources indicate the P terminal is to the pilot light, which I believe is the single lite that flashes on a Signal Stat unit, but I don't have one of those. Where do the P and L wires go to or come from?

Russell,

Here's guess (from a '54 wiring diagram):

P: to the indicator light (same bulb for right and left - one indicator bulb)
X: power lead
L: to the directional lever switch

Maybe someone who has hooked one up will confirm or correct this.

Tim

You got it. I just did one & that,s how it goes. The socket is the same as a headlight.

i know the socket is not labeled, so i assume the flasher is. what is the standard wiring of the prongs?????
as you look at the three prongs w/ the center one @ the 12 o'clock position:

X-P-L which is what ~~~

the center spade is ??
the spade to the rigth is?
the spade to the leftt is?

knowing this standard many of us can wire &/or prewire our trucks (I'm at that time frame), w/o having it all together.

FYI wink wink
if you use a three prong oil pressure switch... the headlight socket works for that also.

Tim- thanks for the tips. L goes to the turn signal lever, but P ?? The wiring diagram for my steering column (actually for the whole 67-72 truck) shows two leads coming from the curved connector for each of the front turn signals. One goes to the front light, and the other goes to the indicator light on the dash (light blue to right and dark blue to left). Do I splice two wires together from P terminal, and if so, how are they connected to the two indicator lights so they flash correctly?? It just occurred to me that perhaps I should have only a two prong flasher for this set-up. That is what is shown on a diagram from 50chevy.freeservers.

Jim and Caroline-- The prongs are labeled on the flasher. P is at the top, X is to the left, L is to the right

If you have ind. lamps for each side you dont need the P term. or you can use a 2 prong flasher.

Thanks for the tips, Tim and Wrenchbender. I am wired, and can report that the hazard lights and brake lights work fine, but not the turn signals. I'll tinker on them today, and report findings or questions later.

Just a thought...I added isolated LED turn signals to the rear of my 54 truck...went with a new 3 prong electronic flasher. Added a conventional 12v bed roll light tied into the turn signal circuit. Am using an add-on turn signal column mounted unit.

Couldn't get the little indicator lights in the column unit to flash, so I tied in a couple little buzzers. Today I hooked up a non-electronic flasher....same position of wires on the flasher and the indicator lights work!!!

I can't explain why it works, but it sure is great having everything working as advertised.
Might be worth a try if you're having problems getting your add-on turn signal unit to work properly. Hope this might help.

Dave
