I just finished the removable floor panel of my 41', painting and replacing battery and master cylinder access covers...when I noticed a 2 inch or so round hole in the center rear of the panel - very close to the rear edge. So what is it for? Should it also get a cover?

As far as I know, this hole is open and was to stick your finger in to lift up the floorboard. I have a number of 1937-1940 GM trucks and they all have this open hole.

I was thinking that but seems there should be a cover or plug of some kind versus an opening to All the elements. I think I'll try to find a rubber plug to fit it

I don't know for sure, but I think it was made to be as alkay3 says and was left open. I never thought much about it. I don't think the designers back then sweat the small stuff. What's a bit of fumes going to do to you? But they do have one over the master cylinder. It is a bit bigger though. Farmone, let us know what you come up with.

I think the finger hole is just covered with the rubber floor mat. I have never seen a part number for a plug.

Two possible solutions; the first I've implemented. I trimmed a cap off an Ice Mountain gallon container - see Photo Bucket pics, along with one pic for the extra hole under the gas tank. I think that one came off a 5 gallon HDepot paint container - no trimming required! Add a touch of caulk to the rim and you're good to go. I'm still working on getting part numbers for correct size rubber plugs used in several places on my brother's Mustang - designed just for weather sealing access holes in the body. I know they make them - just have to get the part numbers. But given the location on my 41 and the frequency of need to access, can't beat this freebie application. Hope this link works - not my strong suite!

Found a website to buy rubber plugs for just about any size hole you have within normal manufacturing of your truck. Also has a number of items for restoration 47-72' - be sure to browse the entire site. These plugs are nice for weather seal fit; squeeze and pop in/out of hole, $2-$4 each with free shipping and no min order.
