Getting ready to drag the 54 out of the corner of the barn. Truck has been sitting 20+ years. Wondering if anyone has any advice regarding what I should do to the HydraMatic, besides check for fluid, prior to trying to start the truck. Truck was running when parked and trans seemed to be working ok at that time. Thanks.

Hy 54hydramaticFL, I would just check the colour of the fluid and check for a burnt smell, and of course make sure there is an adequate amount to lube/apply everything once you get the truck running. The fluid in ideal condition will be bright red, but you should be able to see through it, hope that helps.

If the fluid looks good I would get the truck running and make sure that things get warmed up good before you try putting it in gear. Also check and make sure the level is where it should be when its warmed up.

Just as important is the engine oil. It could be in worse shape because of contaminants from exhaust blow-by and possible coolant contamination. Thick gummy oil can easily ruin a good engine by clogging up oil passages and seizing bearings and causing all kinds of problems.
