I have a 48 chev 1 ton panel and think the rear end has been changed. My chev. manual said that the # stamped on the right side of the rear end tells me it is a 1/2 ton rear end. If the # was on top then it would be a 3/4 or 1 ton. The number is 8698535. The location then tells me it is a 4:11 and not the 4:57 of the 1 ton.
What I want to do is change the ring and pinion. Jim Carter said that they can take the 4:11 to 3:55 but will not work if it is the 4:57. I want to go to more shows this year but it would help to bring down the rpms on the longer drives. Right now 50 mph is about what works and it would be nice to get 60-65.
Thank you for any help.
