The shaft has two layers & the power wire in the center. While it can be done, it's definately easier to find a short shaft of your own. I've rebuilt a few of them & there are varying lengths, the good part is that mostly they seem to be interchangeable.
Keep an eye out on Ebay for something that looks like what you want. FYI, the shortest ones would be those made to go out the top of the cab.
