I put 83 el camino column in my 49 suburban without much difficulty. two issues are build a mount for column at bottom of guage area. Most GM columns have a built in "saddle" that you can fabricate around to secure to bottom of dash sheet metal. Biggest issue is determining how to connect to the steering box. Depending on length to column Borgeson shafts and couplings are your best friend. their site and tech dept can solve any alignment issues. Post some pictures and can give better info.
