Any thing above regulator will be protected by regulator relays, if field contact is closed to ground direct short.If solder is bad in wire/brush, short goes thru brush holder/ spring, easy path of curent to ground 40+ amps, burn.. I think problem is in generator.Just my input, err-aa/output.
