Ok...now its starting to come together - the engine s/n actually starts with a "J", so it's "JEA", which is correct for a 235 in a '51 model truck. I'm assuming now that it is in fact the original 235. The casting number on the head identifies it as being on a 261...so my guess is somewhere along the line it had a head swap. I wonder if the 261 heads had a larger chamber - effectively reducing the compression if you were to put it on a 235?
