All the original felt or leather seals were soaked in oil, an they always weep a little. See in the rear axle there is a cup to catch leakage in the drum, and a hole to let it out.
The felt or oil soaked material is very kind to the metal. After 139000 miles all my seals were worn out but the shafts , which were not hardened, were fine. Neoprene lip seals are good but dont leak so they tend to get oil on one side and dirt on the other and wear the shaft at one place. If you can handle felt, for grease its OK and grease will come out when the gun is applied, and lubricates the felt and the shaft.
