It depends on how/where you oil filter canister returns oil to the block. Some empty at the bottom of the canister and some empty higher up the canister.
My by-pass canisters empty higher up the canister.
After removing the filter, sucking out the oil, and putting in the new filter:
- Fill the engine with specified amount of oil (5 qts).
- Fill the 1-qt oil canister with a 1-qt of oil (fill the 2-qt canister with 2 qts of oil).
- Start and run the truck for several minutes.
- Turn off the engine, clean up, and have a home-made beer.
- Check the oil level, and top up as necessary.
