As DADS50 said - the diagram in the reproduction FAM is pretty degraded and not possible for me to tell which way the lip faces.

I asked the same question in Feb 2012. Here's what Denny Graham guessed, which matches DADS50's responce.

The most likely place for an oil leak to develop would be at the front crank seal meaning if oil got past the shield it would probably end up more towards the front. The back of the mount is well under the front plate. Also the stones, mud water and other debris would be thrown up from the front and it might offer a little extra protection. A cut away illustration of the mount is in the FAM, section 6 sheet 12 and it appears that the curved edge is towards the front.

Amazing how something as simple as a rubber motor mount can cause so much agony isn't it!
