Probably a mechanical failure in the timing system. Gears, chains, nylon gears, gear pin, broken shaft, slipped a tooth, That's what backfire means to me. Electrical failure will just not start. (no spark, no fire, as in no backfire). Best thing to do first: Carefully check timing.
