Folks,
My gauges all worked well before the disassembly (my truck is in paint shop jail)....
I chose not to paint the housings or play with the gauges more than I had to. I did gently clean up the housings.
For the speedometer, I did take the odometer off and put new decals on them along with a gentle cleaning of the gears and new lithium grease. The new needle (which does NOT come with the part that goes over the pin, so I had to use the old one) worked fine. I used my test speedometer cable and drill to 'test' the speedometer (it runs counter clockwise) to make sure everything worked.
Good to know the fuel gauge uses the housing to ground itself. I know the lamps do too.
For the cost, I think it was minimum. The glass, bezels, gaskets, needle and decal kit ran less about $50.
I think this is the way to go UNLESS you have gauge problems, then I would consider a different route.
I actually enjoyed it.
