First of all you should refer to the wiring diagram to see where your loose wire should go. What side of the coil is it attached to? There's several on line wiring diagrams to refer to. Perhpas someone will post a link. I have them on my home computer.

Next, if you have an original setup in your distributer (points/cond/etc) then if you leave the key in the 'on' position and depending on the position of the distributer shaft, you could damage the points as there would be a stead supply of current going through them.

You might want to crank the engine can check to see if you have spark at the plugs?

IF you do have spark, then I would look to see what the fuel sitituation is. Perhaps there is some trash in the fuel causing issues?
