what year we talking about?
if you went TO 6V you don't want a resistor in the circuit, did you mean to say you went TO 12V?
what is that voltage reading on the resistor?
if it's the same on both sides, you've got something wired wrong, like another wire going to the coil [from the starter?] that's "feeding back"
