Remove the wire from the sender. Turn on the ign. Notice the gauge reading. Ground the wire & look at the gauge. It should read full one way & empty the other way. I forgot which on that model. It sounds like you have an electric fuel pump under the truck. Follow the wire going to it & see if it hooks to a switch or to the ign switch. It may be working all the time or just for priming.
