Slow Rider,
the voltage regulator contacts in the regulator should prevent that occurance. I would be suspecting a regulator problem. If you pull the cable while it is running, well above idle, the voltage at the regulator battery terminal should not be much above 7 volts. I don't have a chart in front of me but if you see a lot more than that, your regulator is at fault.
