You guys are right, if you are wiring your alterntor and ampmeter, you need to run the hot wire from the alternator to the ampmeter and from there to either the battery or the post on the footstarter. It should be 10 guage or thicker wire.

Unfortunately an Ampmeter will only tell you the direction of flow in the charging circuit. A voltmeter would be more useful as it tell you the status of your battery and whether your alternator is charging properly.

Does anyone know of someone who makes a voltmeter that will fit in the original guage cluster where the ampmeter should go? I read somewhere a datsun b-210's voltmeter is the same size/shape and would love to find something along those lines..
