I removed every other leaf starting with the shortest and leaving the two top ones. The top, longest spring locates the whole bunch, the second one is a safety back up, from there down they support the one above. Removing every other one does gives a softer ride but also greatly reduces the load rating. Adding teflon liner or Poly-liner between each leaf does as much or more to soften the ride as removing leafs. Be sure to clean off any sharp edges, steps, and rust before assembly. Also, radius the top side of each leaf so it doesn't dig into the leaf above it, this is really important when using Poly-liner.
Trailer supply houses have new u-bolts and center pins. You will need to bend new retainer clips or shorten what you have if you remove leafs.
