Flywheel/ clutch housing not so stupid a design. Especially when the rear motor mounts are integral with it. They didn't expect you to pull the housing to get to those items. And the way the rear of the block was designed that is the best way to attach it to the block. At the time they didn't think of the flange webs that the V8's and newer 6's have. I think its easier to get a clutch out of a 235 than a small block V8 in the truck, so it isn't all that bad an idea.
And I really like that "all original deal" please keep us all up todate on its progress.
