I have an SM420 in my 54 3100. The transmission started popping out of 4th gear while climbing hills and sometimes during acceleration. In investigating why it would do this I found that it is a result of a worn out pilot bushing. I found that there was only a remnant of the pilot bushing left in the end of the crankshaft.
The input shaft on my SM420 has around a 1/8" up-and-down play on it. My question is: How much play on the input shaft of my transmission is too much? At this point I am trying to determine what is normal so I know whether I need to fix this or not.
