you have a hot wire hooked to ground someplace, and it may be there at the right tail [reversed wires]

also if putting power to the brake switch got lights, that means the power is wrong up there because the power to the brake switch comes from the light switch and/or fuse panel, NOT from the blinkers - the blinkers merely interrupt the brake light or power it up if the brakes aren't applied
