That sounds like a grounding problem.

Make sure the sockets are grounding right. Does a '66 have the turn signal lights in the hood still? You might try running a temporary jumper wire from the light socket to the negative post of the battery to see if that clears the problem. If it does the problem is definately a bad ground.
