you don't need shims, the journal bores are held to +or- .0005" as well as the crank journals. They make pretty much any undersize you might want at least down to .040" The other measurement would be for reassembling old parts. That is why when you order bearings from EGGE, you don't get shims for engines after '47, they don't need them.
